Jordan received last week a 4,000-ton shipment of French wheat, bringing to 12,000 tons the total amount donated by the French government to Jordanian drought victims.
A French embassy statement said the wheat was delivered at the Jordanian Red Sea resort of Aqaba and would be distributed by the UN's World Food Program to some 30,000 families struck by the drought in the kingdom.
The shipment is the last of its kind donated by France and brings total French contribution to the World Food Program to $2.3 million.
Jordan, like many other regional countries, was the victim of drought in 1998, 1999 and 2000 but steady rainfall this past year has raised hopes of a better season for farmers and cattle grazers throughout the kingdom. — (AFP, Amman)
