Jordan’s trade deficit narrowed by 24 percent in the first five months of 2002. The Kingdom exported 53 million Jordanian dinars ($75 million) worth of merchandise in the first five months of 2002, a 17 percent increase compared to figures from the same period last year, official figures revealed.

The Kingdom’s imports decreased by four percent from January to May from JD 1.4 million to JD 1.3 million. Re-exports increased to JD 173 million from JD 120 million during the same period. Iraq was Jordan’s largest product market, importing JD 108 million worth of goods from the Kingdom, a 19 percent share. The United States came in second place with a JD 75 million total.

Jordan’s main trading partners over the last decade were Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Some 74 percent of Jordan’s total exports headed for Arab markets over the past 10 years, with imports from those markets representing 84 percent of the total. — (menareport.com)
