MobileCom recently announced it has activated its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Kingdom-wide, bringing its GSM network to 2.5 generation (2.5G) with the commercial services launch set for the beginning of 2002, reported a company press release.
GPRS allows mobile phone users to access information to be exchanged at fixed-line Internet dial-up speed across a mobile telephone network without having to dial up a connection.
Although a GPRS phone is always connected to the network, users of the services are only charged by volume of data transmitted which significantly reduces cost as opposed to existing connection costs based on the amount of time users stay connected. Another benefit to users comes from significantly faster connection speeds of approximately 30 kbps.
MobileCom is the Jordanian public mobile telephone network operator, and is the operator of the mobile communications license granted to Jordan Telecom. The company has built a new mobile communications network to serve the Hashemite Kingdom and launched its full public service in Jordan in 2000.
