The total value of bounced checks in Jordan rose to 5.9 million Jordanian dinars ($191 million) in the first quarter of 2001, up from JD 131.9 million in the first quarter of 2000—reflecting a three percent rise.

However, the actual number of bounced checks dropped from 147,200 to 141,300 during the same period, according to Addustour daily.

Furthermore, the Jordanian banking sector reported 549,200 bounced checks had been written throughout the year 2000, valued at JD 494 million ($695 million). This implies an 18.6 percent rise in the number of bounced checks and a 25 percent rise in their value compared with the previous year. –(MENA Report)
