ALBAWABA – Israel began importing cars from Morocco as its automotive sector faced multiple challenges as a result of the Turkish boycott.

Israel imports cars from Morocco

Israel imported a small number of Moroccan-made cars from Renault Group from the Stellantis Kenitra plant and plans to import more from other brands, including Peugeot 208 cars, according to Calcalist, an Israeli economic news site and engine.

Stellantis Kenitra plant, a Moroccan car plant belonging to the international automobile manufacturing group Stellantis, was founded in 2019. Stellantis factories managed to increase its production this year from 200,000 cars to 450,000 cars annually, after investing $322 million (300 million euros) in expanding the company's production.

According to Calcalist, Israel will import Peugeot 208 PureTech cars, which are expected to arrive in the country next year.

Turkey halts trade with Israel

It is worth noting that in May 2024, the Turkish government announced a boycott of Israel and suspended all trade operations until Israel decides on a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. As a result, Israel’s automotive sector faced a major crisis due to its dependence on Turkish-made cars.

Moreover, Israel’s market is running low on Toyota and Hyundai car models, and there are no signs of resuming Turkish imports, even if the conflict in the region ends.
