According to Al-Zamman newspaper, the State Company of Iraqi Ports has recently won a $7 million contract to develop, to dig and to deepen the Khawr Azubayr Port near Basra.
A source in the company said that the contract, which is signed for the first time with an Iraqi company, also includes removing sunken ships since the Iraqi-Iranian war. It also consists of deepening three quays to enable big oil and gas tankers to harbor the port. The executing Iraqi company reported that it's not intending to import labor to execute this project, which means that it will employ jobless Iraqis. In addition, the project will promote the business and economic activities in the ports.
