Kamal Kharrazi, the Iranian foreign minister, has formally thanked his Egyptian counterpart, Amr Moussa, for the help Egypt has extended to Iran in joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), reported Al-Ahram.
Most of Egypt’s effort has taken place in Geneva, the headquarters of the WTO. Through its diplomatic mission in the city, Egypt has coordinated an intense effort to push for the approval of an application request that was first submitted by Tehran in July 1996.
Faiza Abul-Naga, Egypt's permanent representative to the UN's European headquarters is considered the unofficial spokesperson for the developing countries in the WTO.
As things stand at present, Iran’s request for membership has been placed on the WTO’s February agenda. According to Al-Ahram most of the developing countries seeking membership in the WTO are either Arab or African. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
