Iran’s customs office in Astara exported 70,000 tons of non-oil oil products in the past two months, valued at $92 million. Exports consisted of clothing, shoes, eggs, fabric, potatoes, macaroni, cement and detergents, reported IRNA.
Some 26,000 tons of the goods worth $269 million were transit shipped through Astara from other countries and were destined for Georgia and the Azerbaijan Republic in April and May 2002. Transit of goods shipped via Astara customs amounted to 179,000 tons over the past Iranian year (ending March 20), worth $1.23 billion.
Astara is a small town in northwest Iran, which borders the Azerbaijan Republic and serves as a surface transportation bridge between the two regions. On the other side of Astara a similar town bearing the same name exists in Azerbaijan soil. — (menareport.com)
