The overall value of authorized investments in the Tunisian industrial sector grew to 990.7 million Tunisian dinars ($681.8 million) during the first half of 2001. This figure reflects a 25.6 percent increase compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, when investments stood at TD 788.6 million, according to Al-Watan daily.
Investment in Tunisia’s building materials sector, one of the nation’s major industries, jumped from TD 122.7 million to TD 305.9 million during the same period. Investments in electrical and mechanical industries grew from TD 94.5 million to TD 124.2 million during the same period, a 31 percent climb.
In comparison, overall foreign investments last year amounted to over $720 million, a 122 percent rise compared to 1999. The energy sector alone attracted $215 million in 2000. —(MENA Report)
