According to a preliminary energy audit conducted by Tecom in its facilities, a robust building operating practice would reduce energy consumption by 10 per cent immediately.
Mattar Al Kaabi, executive director - Building Facilities Management of Tecom Investments, said over the next five years, energy consumption will be reduced by 25 per cent.
“The 10 per cent saving was attractive, especially that we tried to avoid any additional investment at the start of the programme. Based on the same assessment, a water conservation of 30 per cent was targeted over a period of 3 years,” Al Kaabi said while sharing Tecom’s ‘Energy and Water Conservation strategy’, which supports the 2020 Energy goals of Dubai, with Khaleej Times on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Since early 2006, Tecom has been on a mission to adopt sustainable development principles into various facets of its operations, resulting in a reduction in electricity consumption by 17 per cent and water consumption by 60 per cent in the end of 2012 from the pre-conservation programme baseline.
According to Tecom’s night audits, most of the waste in energy happened at night because lights and air conditioners were left on in offices, when there were no employees.
Tecom has adopted the RADAR (Results, Approach, Deployment, Assessment & Review) approach to set clear and measurable goals.
He said there were five criteria on which the sustainable development initiatives were founded upon: green building certification of all buildings (new and existing), ongoing energy and water conservation programme, sustainable procurement of office equipment, staff awareness on the issue of climate change and renewable energy.
