An international consortium has been commissioned by the Egyptian government to carry out a $700 million mobile telecommunications project, reported Al-Akhbar. The development of the network will be implemented in three stages, the first of which will allow for the connection of 5.1 million new telephone lines.
The number of mobile subscribers in Egypt was estimated at 2.86 million in the first half of 2001, according to Fakria Allam, head of the Egyptian Telecommunication Authority.
Mobile communication services are provided to the public via 2,314 mobile transponder stations spread throughout the country. During the same period, Egypt’s telephone network included 7.6 fixed telephone lines, serving the 6.1 million registered subscribers. — (menareport.com)
