Intec Telecom Systems, a London-based provider of Operational Support Systems (OSS) for telecoms companies, recently signed a $1.5-million deal with Egypt’s fixed-line telephone monopoly Telecom Egypt (TE).
The agreement will supply TE with Intec's InterconnecT and Inter-mediatE billing systems, which will enable the national carrier to charge its business partners for using its network and services. The state-owned TE provides the infrastructure for 60 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throughout the country.
The billing systems will provide TE with the ability to handle the growing volume of network traffic generated by these partnerships, as well as a platform that can track, measure and charge for the use of TE's entire network. This will be performed by gathering raw data from switches, routers and servers and transforming it into comprehensive billing information.
Intec's CEO Kevin Adams stated he hopes that this agreement will increase his company’s exposure in the Middle East market and draw other regional carriers and service providers to support their networks’ with Intec systems.
The ISP market in Egypt is fully liberalized and highly competitive, with companies offering a range of services including dial-up, pre-paid and premium services. There are approximately 55,000 paying Internet subscribers and an estimated 250,00 Internet users in Egypt, according to TE figures.
Telecom Egypt, formerly known as Arento, was established in 1918 as the Egyptian Post, Telegraph and Telephone (PTT) administration. Its services include basic telephony, international services for telephony and leased lines, frame relay, ATM, ISDN, intelligent networks, voice over IP gateways, DSL services, VSAT hub and hubless operation. The company also provides all the transmission facilities in Egypt.
