More than 100 decisionmakers for Egypt’s public sector and oil and gas, maritime and media sectors gathered at Cairo’s Royal Meridian to attend a seminar organized and hosted by Inmarsat Ltd, the mobile satellite communications provider.

Along with Inmarsat, representatives from Thrane & Thrane, Inmarsat’s terminal manufacturer, Xantic, Inmarsat’s Land Earth Station Operator and Suez Electronics, Inmarsat’s service provider in Egypt, delivered the seminar sessions.

While the one day seminar delivered by Inmarsat and its partners included case studies on the benefits of voice and data mobile satellite communications, the presenters focused on the unique capabilities of Inmarsat in delivering data mobile communications, at high speed, over its satellites almost from anywhere in the world. Data traffic over Inmarsat’s Indian Ocean region increased by 222 percent in the last quarter of 2001, according to a company press release.

GAN, or Global Area Network, is a mobile solution that allows users to send and receive bandwidth intensive information from virtually anywhere in the world. GAN supports data speeds of up to 64 kb/s, almost seven times faster than speeds offered by current GSM networks.

“This increase in data traffic from the region means that the region’s need for data mobile communication over GAN is increasing especially in areas where infrastructure is not available,” continues Alla Allam, executive manager of Suez Electronics.

Inmarsat Ltd owns and operates a global mobile satellite network and delivers its communications solutions through a worldwide network of approximately 250 distributors and other service providers operating in over 150 countries to end users in the maritime, land and aeronautical sectors.

Inmarsat Ltd has a portfolio of mobile satellite solutions, including voice, fax, intranet and Internet access and other data services. Inmarsat Ltd has over 21 years of experience in designing, implementing and operating satellite networks.

At the end of December 2001, approximately 240,000 terminals were registered to access Inmarsat Ltd’s services. Inmarsat Ltd is also supported by partners in the fields of equipment

manufacture, software provision and systems integration. Inmarsat Ltd is a subsidiary of Inmarsat Ventures plc. — (menareport.com)
