Mobile satellite communications company Inmarsat Limited and Nokia have joined forces to investigate ways of enabling multiple users to connect to Inmarsat satellite network via a single satellite terminal using Wireless LAN technology.
In effect this would mean that users equipped with Nokia WLAN cards in their notebook PC’s would be able to access the worldwide web, send and receive emails, and access their corporate LANs and WANs via Inmarsat’s network virtually wherever in the world including on a ship or a plane.
Inmarsat Ltd owns and operates a global satellite network and delivers its solutions through a distribution network of approximately 260 distributors and other service providers operating in around 80 countries worldwide to end users in the maritime, land and aeronautical sectors.
Inmarsat Ltd has a portfolio of satellite solutions, including voice, fax, intranet and Internet access and other data services.
At the end of December 2001, approximately 240,000 terminals were registered to access Inmarsat Ltd’s services. Inmarsat Ltd is also supported by partners in the fields of equipment manufacture, software provision and systems integration. Inmarsat Ltd is a subsidiary of Inmarsat Ventures plc. — (menareport.com)
