ALBAWABA – Huawei, the Chinese multinational technology company, has registered its smartwatches as medical devices to boost sales.

The well-known Chinese company has registered its D2 smartwatch as a medical device to increase sales and compete in the highly competitive market.
Notably, Huawei launched its D2 smartwatch in November 2024, allowing users to purchase it through their medical insurance, rather than paying it themselves.
The Huawei Watch D2 is now available in pharmacies across China, where it has become popular and often sells out of stock.
“The watches are currently not available. Buyers need an appointment. There are more than 500 people in the queue,” a pharmacy in Shanghai told Chinese media.
Huawei users in China can obtain the smartwatch through their medical insurance by registering it as a medical device, thanks to the blood pressure tracking function on the D2.

Huawei Watch D2 is priced at approximately $409 (2,988 yuan). The watch provides multiple health features for its users, including monitors to measure the wearer’s blood pressure, sleep quality, heart rate and number of steps. (Huawei)
Medical insurance providers deposit the cost into each user's account, allowing them to receive the watch with little or no out-of-pocket expense.
This has significantly boosted Huawei's sales across China, making the watch very popular and helping it compete with other rivals, as Apple’s smartwatch is not registered as a medical device in the country.
It is worth noting that Huawei Watch D2 is priced at approximately $409 (2,988 yuan). The watch provides multiple health features for its users, including monitors to measure the wearer’s blood pressure, sleep quality, heart rate and number of steps.
The smartwatch remains a topic of debate in China and the broader market, as the company now refers to it as a 'wrist blood pressure recorder.'
However, many are questioning whether it is appropriate to classify it as a medical device, especially since an actual blood pressure monitor can be purchased for a fraction of the price of the Huawei Watch D2.
