Some 15 million Egyptian pounds ($3.5 million) have been allocated by the Giza municipality for the development and modernization of 36 unplanned urban lots, according to the district’s Governor Mahmud Abu Al-Lail. The funds would be invested in various building and infrastructure projects, reported Al-Ahram.
A portion of the funds would be directed to providing essential services to limited income families residing within these areas. This project is part of a series of measures taken to provide housing for the nation’s poor.
Authorities announced earlier this month that it would soon allocate residential land at no charge to low-income families throughout the country under the new Mortgage Leasing Law.
Al-Lail decided earlier this year to specify a land of 6873 meter square for public use in the area of Sidi Ammar to establish 210 residential units for emergent sheltering and to build and assembly for public schools and an Azhar religious institution.
The governor also declared that a research is being conducted as groundwork for the establishment of a new district in Imbaba to afford more services for the slums’ residents.
