Egypt’s 41 seaports suffer from a monopoly of control by foreign marine service agencies. Four international navigation companies handled 1,100 ships crossing the Suez Canal in the first quarter of 2001, reported Al-Jazira. This figure is equivalent to 40 percent of all vessels crossing the Canal during the same period. International marine service companies in Egypt control 50 percent of the country’s marine services sector. — (menareport.com)
