(AFP, Amman) - Jordan's first private airline, Jordan Aviation, has received the green light form the transport ministry, and will operate charter flights to stimulate tourism, the company announced.
"The company will launch its first flights in the next two months, after receiving authorisation from the transport ministry," top Jordan Aviation official Mohammed Khashman was quoted as saying in Sunday's edition of the economic daily Al-Aswaq.
"Jordan Aviation has already chartered a Boeing 737-300 as a first stage," and will obtain others in the future, Khashman said.He described the company's first aim as being "to help move tourists inside Jordan, and open up new markets to promote tourism."He gave no details of the company's capital.
The only two airlines operating in Jordan until now, "Royal Jordanian" and "Royal Wings," have been state owned. However, Royal Jordanian is due to become fully privatised by the beginning of next year.
