Additional firefighters from the United States continue to arrive at the scene of an oil well fire in Oman, according to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) on Monday, August 13.
A team of experts from Houston-based Will Well Control already arrived to the field almost a week ago, trying to find means of fighting the blaze. According to officials, flames from the fire have reached up to 15 meters in height.
The leak, which began on August 5th in an oil well situated 120 kilometers northwest of Haima, has caused a spill of 2,000 barrels a day. According to AFP news agency, the accident took place when MB Petroleum was involved in well-pulling hoist operations for PDO on a new well. The cause of the incident is still unknown.
Petroleum Development Oman is the country’s largest oil company, and accounts for approximately 90 percent of the country's total production. The Omani government owns 60 percent of the company, Royal Dutch Shell holds a 34 percent stake, four percent is held by TotalFinaElf and two percent by Partex. — (Mena Report)
