Organizers of the fourth annual Gitex Cairo exhibition, to be held April 3-6, 2002 at the Cairo International Conference Center say interest from new international information and communication technology companies is on the rise. The exhibition, which featured an Italian Pavilion in 2001, will add a UK Pavilion and a Taiwanese pavilion in 2002.

“Gitex Cairo is a young and developing exhibition and the response we are getting from the international community is an encouraging sign that it has significant potential to rival the popularity of other world-class ICT exhibitions,” said Ibrahim Al-Hashemi, corporate manager at the Dubai World Trade Center.

Earlier this month, the Union of Egyptian Industries presented a study aimed at boosting the country’s software industry to two billion dollars from the current $50 million in the next five years. The plan focused largely on localization, customization and consultation activities.

Scan Middle East segment of the exhibition will feature products and services that focus on identification and data capture (AIDC) technology. The retail component, Cairo Computer Shopper will also be held in conjunction with Gitex Cairo. In 2001, the two events combined attracted more than 50,000 visitors.

The Gitex Cairo tradeshow attracted about 200 exhibitors, representing 17 countries in 2001 and more than 11,200 trade professionals from throughout the Levant/North Africa region visited the exhibition. — (Mena Report)
