Lebanon’s Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) has sealed a deal on behalf of Electricite Du Liban (EDL) with an Italian-German consortium, Ansaldo-Siemens, to expand the country’s electricity production capacity. The planned 375-megawatt increase will go on stream within the next three months, raising production by 20 percent.
Southern Lebanon’s Zharaini power plant and the North’s Baddawi plant will undergo renovations. Baddawi will receive a second gas unit to produce an additional 150 megawatts of power and the steam units of both stations will be used at full capacity, generating another 150 megawatts in Baddawi and 75 megawatts in Zahrani.
Lebanon gets an estimated 200 megawatts of electricity from Syria monthly at a cost of eight to nine million dollars per month. The country prepared for power crisis earlier in January when Syria cut its supply due to EDL’s inability to clear a $120 million debt.
