More than 408,000 Saudis used the King Fahd Causeway linking the Kingdom with Bahrain during the 12-day Eid Al-Feter holiday, beginning on December 12. This constitutes a 113 percent rise compared to the 191,000 drivers passing through last year.
Saudi vacationers are reportedly showing disdain toward traveling to the United States and Europe, following the September 11 attacks on the United States, and have opted for spending their vacations in Muslim and Arab destinations, according to Al-Iqtissadia.
The King Fahd Causeway is a 25-kilometer bridge and highway structure. The four-lane freeway has dramatically improved communications and increased trade between the two states since its inauguration in 1986.
It extends from Jasra in northwest Bahrain to Al-Azizia, a suburb of Al-Khubar in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. A single man-made island in the center of the causeway incorporates customs and immigration facilities. — (menareport.com)
