A 20 percent increase has been recorded in sale of steel bars to the Egyptian construction industry over the past year. Between July 2000 and June 2001, 1.8 billion tons of steel bars were sold in Egypt, while over the corresponding period the previous year, sales stood at 1.5 billion tons, according to the ministry of public enterprise.

Local steel bars production has exceed sales by 85 million tons, reaching 1.9 billion tons between July 2001 and June 2001. Production rose by 15 percent during that period, from the 1.6 billion tons of steel bars produced the previous year. The ministry’s findings are based on reports written by Egypt’s major steel bar producers, Al-Hadid & Al-Sulb, Al-Izz, Al-Nahas, and Al-Delta companies. — (Mena Report)
