The Egyptian Minister of Environment, Nadia Makram Ubeid, was recently quoted in Al-Ahram newspaper, stating that 24 large Egyptian enterprises had recently adjusted their environmental working conditions, with the help of investments totaling 350 million Egyptian pounds.
These companies had joined the governmental environment protection program aimed at preventing local industrial enterprises from dumping their sewerage and waste into the Nile River.
Ubeid added that the ministry would invest five billion EP during the upcoming three years, in an effort to reduce the industrial pollution caused by the large and medium-sized enterprises in Egypt. The minister asserted that seven billion EP had been invested in the same area during the years 1994-2000.
Moreover, he stated that the garbage gathering, shipping, classifying and recycling projects in the Egyptian districts are expected to create some 37,000 jobs. The agricultural, plastic, glass and paper waste recycling projects are to provide an additional 10,000 jobs.
Presently, the local waste recycling projects are capable of disposing of 9.3 million tons of garbage from the various cities, three million tons of agricultural waste and 25,000 tons of medical waste. ― (MENA Report)
