The Egyptian government plans to pave three new international highways. These projects will be offered to local and foreign investors on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The total investment required for this highway construction scheme is estimated at $6.2 billion.
According to the Egyptian minister of transportation Ibrahim Al-Dumairi, the new scheme includes the highway links between Sallum—near the Libyan border—and Rafah, Burj Al-Arab—near Alexandria— towards South Africa and between Port Said Halaib and Shalatin.
Meanwhile, investors interested in operating a toll road across the Western Desert, linking Alexandria to Al-Fayyum, have recently admitted they face obstacles to initiating this project, now doubting whether it financially feasible. The costs of this project are estimated at $180-260 million. — (Mena Report)
