Egypt’s minister of supplies and internal commerce, Hassan Khadhr, reported that for the 2000/2001 sugar harvesting season a monthly production of 150,000-175,000 tons was forecasted. The projected sugar output for the season was assessed at 1.1 million tons.
Sugar is produced in Egypt from both cane and beet, with cane sugar being the senior crop of the two. It is grown mainly in Upper Egypt and comprises about 80 percent of total sugar production. Beet sugar is grown in the northern part of the Nile Delta.
Egypt is still a major importer and relies on outside sources for about one third of its total sugar requirement. Domestic consumption of sugar exceeds 1.75 million tons a year. — (MENA Report)
