The European Commission will provide an extra €34.5 million, under the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (MEDA) program, to support cooperation actions in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.
The new funding, which complements the National Financing Plans for 2002, will support the rehabilitation program of the areas affected by terrorism in Algeria and the Tempus program in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.
The aim of rehabilitation program in Algeria is to help those who were uprooted from their homes because of terrorist activities in the north-west region of the Arab state. The program will rehabilitate the social infrastructures and means of production in the areas affected by violence. The global EU contribution to this four year program is €30 million, of which €16 million was committed in 2003 and €14 million in 2004.
The Tempus Program helps to reform and modernize higher education systems by developing inter-university cooperation between the EU and its partners. In 2003, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and Lebanon joined the Tempus program.
The Commission has invested €20.5 million to support the participation of these partners, except the Palestinian Authority, in Tempus. The Palestinian Territories will be subject to a separate financing decision. — (menareport.com)
