The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (EASM) is preparing to launch two new programs aimed at applying mandatory national and Gulf Cooperation Counci (GCC) product specifications and standards. Both programs form an integral part of EASM’s drive to safeguard public health and preserve the environment through the implementation of national specifications while bolstering customs union plans among GCC states.
Director General of the EASM, Walid Al-Mansouri, recently told a news conference that both programs aim to activate the monitoring role of the Authority and ensure conformity by local producers and importers of quality standard specifications.
Al-Mansouri said that the programs offer multiple benefits. “for local consumers, they will help reduce the import and production of sub-standard products while for manufacturers they will encourage them to improve the quality of their products.” He also noted that the programs will serve to raise consumer confidence in locally manufactured goods.
“Consumers will become more aware of quality standards as monitoring mechanisms are put in place. Exporters will need to apply conformity measures at their manufacturing and production units in accordance with globally endorsed procedures and in order to be able to issue conformity certificates for their exported products,” said Al-Mansouri.
The programs will ensure that exported goods are not rejected by the importing country on the basis of non-conformity to set standards thereby saving time and reducing costs. They will also facilitate imports by ensuring speedy clearance and access to the local market and by minimizing the risk margin and the value of insurance policies on shipments. Those traders that comply with the standards will also be protected against importing inferior quality products.
The second conformity program is for manufactured goods targeting the domestic market and will adopt two methods. The first is obligatory and will be implemented in two successive phases: all national factories or industrial establishments whose produce carries mandatory specifications will have to register them with the EASM and then submit them for laboratory testing. The second optional method involves securing a license under the UAE conformity mark in accordance with global ISO requirements.
The authority will work to implement both programs in cooperation with an international specialist company that has an existing business relationship and a solid expertise in testing for standards requirements and the awarding of internationally recognized quality standards certificates. The latest technology will be used in the application of the programs along with user-friendly methods in order to ensure full transparency for all parties. — (menareport.com)
