The Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) has reported that it handled 44.3 million tons of cargo in 2000, about 10 percent more than the 39.7 million tons registered in 1999. DPA also reported an eight percent increase in containers handled in 2000.

The figures provided by the DPA are comprehensive, and include product categories such petroleum products, foodstuffs, metals, electronics and textiles.

Quoted by the Gulf News, Sultan bin Sulayem, managing director of DPA and chairman of the Jebel Ali Free Zone, said that the results show healthy growth for the region, and not only the DPA.

The increased volume is indicative of the growth of the local market, in contrast to the market fluctuations associated with the transshipment sector, he added. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
