Dubai Municipality is currently undertaking a survey on the emirate's coasts with the objective of appraising the existing facilities along the coastline prior to introducing a detailed program for carrying out future maintenance and restoration works for these facilities.
This was stated by Head of the Marine Unit at the General Projects Department Eng. Khalid Mohammed Al-Zahed, who noted that 30 percent of the survey had already been completed.
He added that the survey, which began in August this year, involves all coastal facilities including the northern breakwaters off Jebel Ali Port and Al-Mamzar Lagoon as well as the Dubai Creek.
“The survey will enable us to prepare a database of the geographical information systems (GIS) related to the marine works. We will list this information as part of the current GIS database of Dubai Municipality. Later on, this will be made available to the public online,” said Al-Zahid.
He added that the types of facilities that are surveyed include the 6.5 kilometer long breakwaters, the 13-kilometer long rock reinforcement for the coasts, the 4.7 kilometer long supplementary cement walls, a number of small ports and several other small buildings off the coast.
The coastal areas, covered by the survey, include Al-Mamzar Lagoon, Deira Corniche, Dubai Creek, Jumeirah Open Beach, Jumeirah Corniche, Umm Suqeim, Jumeira Port, Umm Suqeim Port and Mina Al-Seyahi.
Al-Zahed noted that the survey would yield vital information such as the present status of the facilities, their operational status, expected date of operation or use of the facilities, future maintenance requirements including the necessary costs, maintenance priority for each facility, and the prospect of enhancing these facilities as per the future needs. — (menareport.com)
