Dubai’s ports and customs authority has announced that it will be expanding its Dubai Customs Automobile Zone (Ducamz), increasing the space available to 7.8 million square feet, reported the Khaleej Times.
At present, Ducamz, which is located in Ras Al-Khor, features 236 showrooms, which are able to accommodate 17,000 cars. Once the expansion is complete, 135 new car showrooms will be added. Car traders have reportedly already rented these showrooms.
Ducamz services not only the local market — indeed most of the motor vehicles that pass through are not earmarked for the UAE. Since the project was inaugurated early in 2000, about 60,000 right-hand-drive cars were imported to the zone from various markets and then exported to India, Pakistan and a number of African and European countries.
Tendering for the project is already underway and work will begin as soon as the bidding process is complete, said Ali Foolad, a director of Hamriyah Ports and Customs and chairman of Ducamz Board of Directors.
The expansion project is expected to take about a year to complete. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
