Dubai Internet City (DIC), the world’s first free trade zone focused on e-business and information technology (IT), and Cisco Systems have announced the signing of a further technology partnership agreement, where Cisco will provide DIC with converged voice and data networking technology in DIC’s second phase of expansion.
The California-based Cisco, an international leader in networking for the Internet, was the exclusive provider of DIC’s local networking, security and content distribution technology in its first phase, including the largest implementation of IP Telephony in the EMEA region, with over three thousand of handsets implemented already, and more on the way.
The DIC, a $700 million technology infrastructure project sponsored and underwritten by the Dubai government, awarded its first major contracts in July 2000, collectively valued at some $30 million.
Cisco won the contracts to implement the city’s data center, voice and data network, Internet connectivity and ISP (Internet service provider) infrastructure and billing solutions in conjunction with Siemens Business Services (SBS) and Sun Microsystems.
“In only 12 months the City has gone from the drawing boards, to an active community of technology companies ― and is now about to enter its second expansion phase,” said Mazen Jabri, territory manager at Cisco Systems Middle East. “It is our biggest implementation of IP Telephony, and a true showcase of the power of an integrated end-to-end networking platform.” ― (MENA Report)
