Under a recent decree, to be signed by the Dubai government before the end of the current year, the Jebel Ali Airport City (JAAC) in Dubai will become a holding company for different a host of cities to be developed within the project.
Chief executive officer of DLC, Michael Proffitt, said that all the projects within JAAC, which include Dubai Logistics City (DLC), Science and Technology City, Aviation City, Residential City Exhibition City, Commercial City, Golf and Resort City, will become independent entities reporting to the JAAC holding company, according to <i>Khaleej Times</i>.
The Jebel Ali Airport City, to be built alongside the Jebel Ali seaport and free zone at the cost of Dh30 billion, will be an aviation-related free zone. It will have one customs bond for the entire region, which will include Jebel Ali Airport (JXB), Jebel Ali port and free zone.
Moe than 1.4 million square meters have so far been reserved by around 35 companies, which will begin construction on their individual plots next year.
Upon completion of the expansion program at the Dubai International Airport (DIA), the DLC is expected to add some seven million tons of cargo capacity per year, making Dubai the largest cargo handler in the world.
JXB will have at least six parallel runways to handle 120 million passengers and 12 million tons of cargo per year, serving the emirate’s passenger and cargo air transportation needs until at least 2050.
JXB is expected to allow any company to handle cargo, with fees expected to be cheaper than at other airports.
The Dubai Airshow will also reportedly move to JAAC’s Exhibition City, in time to host the event’s 2009 11th edition. The three million square foot complex will be completed in three phases by 2020 and will be the world’s largest exhibition venue with 19 halls.
