A recently published report by the Jordanian Public Statistics Bureau reveals that the cost of living in Jordan has increased by 0.6 percent in the first half of 2001, compared with the correspondent term the year before.
The report attributed this rise to a seven percent climb in vegetable prices, a 1.2 percent climb in housing rental costs, and an 0.8 percent jump in the price of personal care products, according to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily.
The rising cost of living in Jordan, which us generally considered relatively high in the region, has been a cause for concern amongst Jordanian citizens in recent years. Petrol price hikes in April 1989 had triggered riots in the impoverished southern region of Jordan and similar protests gripped that same region in August 1996 when the government decided to raise the price of bread. ― (MENA Report)
