A Chinese telecom company recently won a $16 million tender to double the capacity of Yemen’s telephone network in over the next two years, reported Al-Hayat. Official sources revealed that the Yemeni Cabinet approved the tender for installing 278,000 telephone lines in the republic.
The project will be completely financed by the government of Yemen. The source did not reveal the name of the Chinese company or any further details regarding the tender.
In January, the Yemeni government approved the addition of 500,000 telephone lines to the republic’s telecommunication network, more than doubling its capacity by the end of 2002, reported the Yemen Observer. The government also agreed to launch an information technology (IT) center and develop Internet services this year. — (menareport.com)
