According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper (July 4, 2005), the Housing Commission of the Egyptian Parliament has revealed that there are 2.5 million vacant residential apartments in Egypt, of which 1 million apartments, say 14.5% of the total residential apartments, are located in Cairo alone. The commission also revealed that at least 8 million new apartments are needed in Egypt until 2008.
