The Civil Service Bureau has launched a three-year plan to increase Bahrainisation in the public sector by more than 95 per cent, it has been revealed.
The bureau has stopped hiring expatriates in various government departments as part of the initiative, sources told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
The number of expatriates in the public sector has reached 7,358 this year, which represents 16pc of the total number of civil servants, compared with 9,883 last year, the sources said.
“This means the government has slashed the number of expatriate employees by more than 20pc in less than a year.”
The plan seeks to train Bahrainis to recruit them in the public sector at different stages.
Education and Health Ministries have already terminated hundreds of expatriates in less than a year and recruited citizens, sources added.
However, the government will continue to recruit expatriates in the absence of qualified Bahraini candidates to take up specialised jobs, they said.
The news comes as parliament conducts a review of expat employment in the public sector.
