Astrolink, global broadband telecommunications company, inaugurated its new Middle East and Africa regional office in the Dubai Airport Free Zone last week. Astrolink is currently the only company building a global constellation of Ka-band satellites to deliver ultra-high-speed Internet access to businesses on a worldwide basis.

With the system launch scheduled for 2003, giving two-way access 'to the desktop' at speeds of up to 226 Mbits/s (compared to today's ISDN access speeds of 128 kbp/s), Astrolink will enable service providers to offer VPN (Virtual Private Networks) and Internet services globally.

Astrolink’S space-based facilities and small satellite dishes, would enable regional operators to quickly connect customers in government, corporate and small and medium-sized companies with ultra-high-speed Internet access.

Astrolink is a $3.6 billion strategic venture of Liberty Media, Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, Telespazio, and TRW. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, Astrolink. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
