Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened the 6th Gulf Water Conference in Riyadh, to assess member countries' current water resources, determine their greatest challenges and set priorities for achieving sustainable water development.
The conference, co-sponsored by Saudi Aramco, ran from March 8-12, in tandem with the 2nd Symposium on Water Conservation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. One of the aims of the conference was to consult with experts about state-of-the-art techniques and technologies relating to water policy. The meeting also sought to promote water-resources strategies in the social, economic, environmental and health arenas.
The recommendations stressed the need for a well-researched balance between water use and sustainability, and reflected what delegates saw as a lack of coordination among academics and engineers. They also called for greater use of desalinated water and a greatly increased role for recycled and purified wastewater in agriculture and industrial processes. — (menareport.com)
