Apple is recalling its popular Beats Pill XL speaker system because of fears that they might overheat.
"In coordination with the Department of Consumer Protection of the Ministry of Economy, and in line with the commitment of the ministry to conduct an on-going review of all the products in the UAE and provide the customer with the required protection, Apple Inc. announces a voluntary recall campaign for Beats Pill XL Speaker," reads an announcement which has been running in local newspapers.
How to return the speakers To return the Beats Pill XL speakers, customers should fill out an online form at https://www.apple.com/ae/support/beats-pillxl-recall/request/. They will then be contacted by a customer service representative to arrange the return of the product to Apple and will receive an online payment within three to four weeks. Customers can also call 8000-444-0407 to speak to an Apple customer service representative. |
Apple has determined that in rare cases, the battery in the speakers may overheat and pose a fire risk. In a statement posted online, Apple advises customers to return their speakers. "In exchange, we will provide you with an Apple store credit or electronic payment ... of Dh1,200," Apple said.
Available since 2014, Beats Pill XL speakers can be identified by a small "b" on the speaker and by the words "beatspillxl" written across the top of the carrying handle. The product recall was first announced by Apple in June.
In June, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that Apple had received at least eight complaints of incidents in which the Beats Pill XL speakers overheated. These cases included one in which a consumer's finger was burnt, and another in which a desk was damaged.
Approximately 233,000 Beats Pill Xl speakers have been sold in the United States and Canada alone, according to the CPSC.
Beats, which Apple bought for $3 billion in 2014, was made popular by its founder, hip-hop legend Dr Dre.
