A decision was recently taken by the United Nations to pay an additional $361.8 to countries who incurred losses a result of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, according to Kuwait Times. Revenues from Iraqi oil sales based on the oil-for-food program will fund the payments.
So far the UN panel in charge of such compensations, consisting of 15 member nations, has dolled out $5.9 billion. Beneficiaries of the compensation funds include 74,442 individual claimants who will receive payments from 60 governments and three international organizations.
Kuwait is expected to receive approximately $38.3 million in the near future, while the total compensation sum to be awarded should reach just under one billion dollars. Jordan has received the largest installment yet, totaling $142.3 million. Bangladesh is also to be compensated, receiving nearly $37.5 million. ― (MENA Report)
