Algeria's trade balance posted a surplus of $5.29 billion in the first two quarters of 2004, announced the Customs' National Computer and Statistic Centre (CNIS).
The value of exports reached $13.47 billion, up 9.67 percent compared to first quarter of 2003, while imports went up 22.40 percent, totalling $8.18 billion.
Oil and has exports still represented the major part of Algeria's sales abroad with 96.58 percent of the global volume ($13.009 billion).
Non oil and gas exports remain trivial, representing a mere 3.42 percent of the global volume, the equivalent of $460 million, still up 25 percent compared to the same period last year.
The main non oil and gas products exported were made up of "semi-finished products" with 2.23 percent ($300 million), followed by foodstuffs, with 0.62 percent ($83 million), and industrial capital goods with 0.13 percent ($17 million).
As for imports, "industrial and agricultural capital goods" top the list with $3.07 billion (37.56 percent), followed by "products for production tool functioning" with $2.12 billion. "Foodstuffs" are in third place with $1,60 billion (19.62 percent). (menareport.com)
