The telecommunications sector is set to become one of Iraq's most important industries, a senior official has said. Mohammed al-Hakim, communications minister in Iraq's interim government, said the telecom sector offers foreign companies a "fantastic investment" as the economy grows and Iraq's young population comes of age.
According to The AP, Al-Hakim said that because mobile phones were outlawed under Saddam Hussein's regime and landlines are decaying or have been destroyed, bringing in foreign investors to capitalize on the economic opportunities is a top government priority.
