Egyptian Football Association (EFA) Chairman Gamal Allam on Wednesday denied claims that the Egyptian Premier League's new season would be cancelled.
All domestic football activity has been suspended since last February, when scores of spectators died in clashes between rival fans in Port Said Stadium.
The new league season was due to kick-off on 17 October, but the EFA – citing a lack of response from the interior ministry – said it would not be able to hold the competition.
"There is no intention to cancel the league's new season," Allam declared at a meeting with football club presidents in Aswan late on Tuesday.
"The EFA, clubs, fans and the government must all work together, as they are all responsible for holding the tournament," he added.
Ahly's die-hard fans – the 'Ultras Ahlawy' – have said more than once that they would stop the resumption of Egyptian football activity unless the perpetrators of the Port Said disaster were brought to justice.
"Ultras Ahlawy want to reiterate the rights of their colleagues who died in the Port Said disaster, but they must give judges the chance to rule on the case, which they must accept," the EFA chairman explained.
Nine senior police officers and three Masry club officials are among 73 people facing charges in relation to the event. Some of the defendants face murder charges, while some senior officers have been charged with assisting the alleged attackers.
