TB plagues the Middle East: 11 political positions Tony Blair really shouldn't have

Tony Blair has been a busy man since he stepped down as Britain’s prime minister back in 2007. Despite denying it, Mr. Blair is said to be earning between $76 million - $155 million since quitting as leader of the UK’s Labour party.

The former PM’s CV demonstrates the variety of positions he has somewhat ironically held, ranging from the UN’s Middle East Peace Envoy, to working as an advisor for a few dodgy dictatorships - take note Libya and Kazakhstan.

After deciding to invade Iraq in 2003 under the false pretense of Saddam Hussein's supposed weapons of mass destruction, which were never found, it is clear Mr. Blair isn’t suited to many of the job roles he has taken up.

Now the newly appointed chairman of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation, despite his diplomatic impotence while he was part of the UN Peace Quartet during many tensions in the Israel-Palestine conflict over the years, Tony may have the public relations swag, but certainly doesn’t have a good track record to back it up!

"Tony Blair being Middle East peace envoy is like making Harold Shipman spokesman for Help The Aged, " British politician George Galloway once remarked referring to the doctor who killed over 250 elderly patients.

Whose idea was this one? Standing down as PM in 2007, Tony Blair took on the role as Middle East Peace Envoy for the UN. With the blood of thousands of Iraqis on his hands, it was probably not the best idea to put a war criminal in charge of peace in the Middle East!

Let’s not beat about the bush. Tony Blair was charismatic as PM and definitely had the gift of the gab. This was proven when he started to advise oppressive regimes for millions of dollars. Being a philanthropist was only natural.

In Kazakhstan where there is a long history of child laborers, torture and oppression according to HRW, London-based firm Tony Blair Associates provided President Nursultan Nazarbayef with some spin-doctoring public relations advice for a whopping fee of $12 million after 15 civilian protesters were shot dead. Blood money?

Meanwhile, Tony Blair Associates was reportedly paid $42 million for advising Kuwait on how to “govern itself” in 2010 calling into question how Mr. Blair was profiting after the Iraq war. This is what we call conflict of interest.

Since retiring as PM, Tony Blair made an estimated fortune of between $76 million - $155 million. Much of this money was from making speeches. TB even turned down a 20-min speech on world hunger recently because his asking price of $510,000 couldn’t be met. That would’ve been $427 per second. He can talk the talk, but can he walk?

Let’s just say Tony Blair’s relationship with the Gaddafi regime in 2007 was interesting. Documents released showed the former PM’s role in advising the Libyan Investment Authority along with playing a part in $700 million BP oil deal, which occurred during the Gaddafi golden years. Safe to say TB had his fingers in a few dirty pies.

In his role as the Middle East peace envoy for the UN, Mr. Blair did very little for peace between Palestinians and Israelis. Palestinian Authority official Nabil Shaath said Blair had achieved little because he kept trying to “please the Israelis”. Despite settlements on the rise and countless Palestinian deaths, the conflict has worsened.

Tony Blair is reportedly paid $3.87 million annually by JP Morgan as a consultant. Couple that with his business interests in the Middle East and something smells fishy. Blair encouraged competition in the Palestinian phone market, indirectly benefiting the bank. More dodgy dealings?

Isn’t TB quite the hustler? Blair also helped in developing a huge gas field off the coast of Gaza worth a whopping $6 billion, without the permission of Palestinians, of course, for the British Gas Group. Guess who British Gas is a client of? JP Morgan.

After standing down as Peace Envoy, Tony is now Chairman of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation. Another role probably not suited given the former prime minister’s shoddy interests in Israel and Palestine, which will no doubt have a strong influence on his decisions.
