ALBAWABA - A joke has turned into a real story in India after a rumor claiming that an Indian-Israeli Mossad assassin was the one behind the killing of the political leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh.

According to the allegations spreading online, a man named "Amit Nakesh" was behind the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.

The thing started as a bizarre international prank and then it became a believable story for many people in India as they started to share the name of the assassin and his story on social media.

Who started the rumor of Amit Nakesh, the Indian-Israeli Mossad assassin?

According to the Telegraph India, some Turkish media websites that are trying to target more views and get catchy snippets to gain more interaction and views invented the "Amit Nakesh" story.

According to Akdeniz Gerçek Gazetesi newspaper, Nakesh joined Israeli military service and he joined Mossad, Israel's secret service, and claimed that he was the one behind Ismail Haniyeh's assassination.

Nonetheless, the newspaper allegedly reported that the Indian-Israeli Mossad man had experience in assassinations and recruiting intelligence sources. Furthermore, the Turkish newspaper added that he participated in multiple operations against "elements that Israel considers hostile".

On the other hand, entrepreneur Eli David also posted on his X account claiming that he started the rumor as a joke. He wrote: "Yesterday I posted a joke that the name of Mossad agent who killed Haniyeh is “Amit Nakesh”, which in Hebrew literally means “assassin”. Today the Turkish press ran with it, and some even referred to him as Colonel Amit Nakesh."

Indian media believed the rumor

What was more strange was that many Indians believed the story and it turned into a reality for them and many of them began to believe with complete certainty that the person who assassinated Haniyeh was an Indian-origin man.

Indian newspapers wrote about the subject and even the famous Indian channel ZEE TV did a live broadcast on YouTube about the Indian Mossad agent who according to their beliefs "was able to carry out an operation that the Israelis were unable to carry out."

The broadcast was made under the title: "India Connection In Ismail Haniyeh Killing."
