ALBAWABA - German football referee Pascal Kaiser recently made headlines for coming out of the closet as gay by publicly proposing to his boyfriend before the game between Köln and Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

However, a group being described as "radical homophobes" on social media wasn't so keen about the public proposal.

According to L'Equipe, Kaiser started getting threats from fans who claimed to have his home address and was later assaulted by three men after stepping into his garden to smoke a cigarette.

Photos of the aftermath flooded social media, capturing Pascal Kaiser's bruised face. Several reports claimed that Kaiser's address was leaked, prompting the clash.

According to Gazeta Express, Kaiser proposed to his boyfriend in front of 50,000 football fans before the game between Köln and Wolfsburg in RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Germany. The proposal was generally met with positivity from the crowd and social media users alike.

While local police didn't reveal the motive behind the attack, many reports linked it to homophobia and an act of violence towards the LGBTQ+ community in Germany.
