ALBAWABA - The restoration of the Damascus Sword monument in Umayyad Square has become a topic of heated debate in Syria after authorities announced the completion of repair work following damage sustained during celebrations marking the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.

Recently, an image circulated on social media, allegedly showing the monument repainted with the colors of the Syrian Independence flag, which was adopted by the new transitional government after the collapse of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024.

The image fueled speculation that the monument had been altered as part of its restoration. However, a fact-check by Agence France-Presse (AFP) confirmed that the image was digitally manipulated and had no connection to the actual restoration process.

The Damascus Sword, originally constructed in the 1960s, suffered structural damage during post-regime celebrations. The restoration process, which began shortly after, aimed to preserve the monument’s original design.

Anas Hamsho, the official in charge of the restoration under Damascus Governorate, confirmed that the monument will retain its traditional elements, including the Damascus rose and fire motif, ensuring that it remains in its historical form.

Authorities have dismissed claims of modifications to the monument’s design, emphasizing that the restoration focused solely on repairing damage while preserving its iconic status in the heart of Damascus.
