ALBAWABA - The skies of Portugal and Spain witnessed an exciting and astonishing astronomical event at dawn today, Sunday, May 19, when a bright fireball crossed the skies of the two countries, turning it into a blue sparkle for a moment.
The latest phenomenon left behind a wonderful scene that caught the attention of thousands of local residents in both countries with many wondering what was the reason behind it.
According to local news reports in Portugal, the bright fireball crossed the country's sky at around 00:46 CET (23:46 Lisbon time).
It has not been confirmed whether the meteorite reached the Earth's surface, however, the Portuguese Civil Protection reportedly said that it may have fallen near the village of Pereira, in Castro Dire, northern Portugal, 60 kilometers southwest of Porto.
Portugal declared a state of alert and mobilized firefighters to inspect the site of the meteorite's fall, stressing that until 2 am Sunday, they were unable to find anything.
Clips circulated online with one showing a woman dancing in the street after a flash of blue and green passed through the sky above her, dominated social media.
A number of users pointed out that the fireball that appeared in the sky of Spain and Portugal was a large meteorite that entered the Earth's atmosphere, lighting up the sky for a few seconds.
