ALBAWABA - Former governor of the Bank of Lebanon Raid Salameh was arrested on Sept. 3 over charges of several financial offences; money laundering, embezzlement, and unlawful enrichment, where he denies any misconduct.

It is worth noting that Salameh was Lebanon's central bank governor for 30 years, until July 2023. Many arrest warrants were issued against him by multiple countries including Germany.

In May 2023, Interpol declared issuing a red notice against Riad Salameh, 72, after France's arrest warrant.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon will appear tomorrow, Monday, before the First Investigative Judge in Beirut, Judge Bilal Halawi.

Salameh will be escorted from the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces building, where he has been detained since last Tuesday, to the Palace of Justice in Beirut for an interrogation session from which the Lebanese judiciary may come out with two options: issuing an arrest warrant against him, as demanded by the Public Prosecution, or release him on bail.

Despite that many Lebanese were happy about the arrest news of the former Bank of Lebanon governor, they were angered to hear what was inside his prison cell.

Salameh was placed in a special cell for high-ranking officials within the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces, where he receives special care.

According to sources, his room has air conditioning (AC) and a fridge, and he has a landline phone that allows him to make calls after his personal phone was seized.
